Frequently Asked Questions

What is the DAMU Meet-Up Tool?

It's a tool for members of the DAMU to find others who live in their area and share their beliefs, while at the same time remaining anonymous.

How does it work?

When you create an account, you input your email address and your zip code. Other users will be able to see your state and approximately how far you are from them, but not your email address. Other users will be able to send messages to you, and you can send messages to others, but your email address will always remain hidden.

Is it safe?

The people you correspond with via this tool could be anybody, so use common sense when divulging personal information or arranging places to meet.

How safe is my personal information?

The most sensitive data we collect about you is your zip code and email, both of which we guard very carefully, and will not show to anyone, even other registered users of the site. If you're extremely paranoid (just because you're paranoid doesn't mean they're not out to get you), we recommend using an an anonymous email address from Yahoo or Gmail, and use a zip code near where you live rather than your actual zip code.

I'm a computer programmer. How safe is my personal information really?

All the data is stored in a password-protected MySQL database that is only accessible from a single IP address. I've done my best to program the web site to be safe from SQL-injection attacks, but I'd welcome other people willing to review my code. Your passwords are stored as MD5 hashes, so even I don't know what they are.

I have a great idea for a feature! Who do I tell?

Feel free to PM me (solistics), or send me an email at solistics [at] yahoo [dot] com. I welcome feedback of every kind! Don't hesitate to drop me a line.

Who's responsible for all this?

The idea originated with Dathon and -Domokun-, and was implemented by me (solistics). Others who have provided feedback, bug reports, and suggestions include: Meg Slate, Monk-E, GypsyD, melodica, Super Sweet, and many others! Thanks everyone!
